Enter The Dragon...

...but not that sort of dragon.

No, this one will hopefully help me to get my words down and also increase my productivity.

It's no secret that I sometimes have trouble with my hands and wrists. After a particularly bad week last week, with me somehow spraining my wrist (goodness knows how!), I went ahead and bought Dragon NaturallySpeaking dictation software. Straight out of the box, I have to say that I'm impressed, especially since I'm actually dictating this blog post today.

How cool is that?

Come Monday, I'll be cracking on with Facing the Music #3, but I will be using my voice instead of my fingers to type. I don't doubt that dictating my novels will take some getting used to, but so far so good. I've already figured out how to use DragonNS with Scrivener and can see it improving my word count considerably. I suspect dictating the words will also help me to curb the temptation to edit every sentence as I go, too, so I'll hopefully get my first drafts down faster... and with two overdue deadlines, that could certainly come in handy!

If anybody is interested, I'll do an update post at the end of next week once I've used the dictation software a bit more and got to grips with it better.

Wish me luck!

Saddle Up! It's writing time again...

I was doing so well, resisting the need to write, but then I saw this call and the voices in my head just would not be quietened and I had to get back in the saddle.

As an experiment, I thought I'd document the creation of this manuscript and clue you in a bit to my thought processes but, be warned, it'll be pretty jumbled up. Obviously, I'm not a published author - yet - so this could all be a load of tosh. Even if it isn't, every writer works differently and you'll need to find what works for you. I'm usually more of a panster and let my plot evolve in stages but with the limited word count and submission deadline in mind, I'm trying something a little different to see how it goes.

  • Sensuality level: from Moderate to super-sexy
  • Contemporary
  • Must be received by November 15th

Day one: Brainstorming

Okay, so I'm starting with a completely blank canvas and I have my notepad at the ready, turned to a blank page and ballpoint pen in hand. At first I considered the New Year theme, one of the other submission calls, and got the faintest idea of an opening moment of crisis by thinking about my heroine and what she was doing at the time. This is where it all gets a little bit scrambled!

I have just discovered Scrivener (updated)

Like many other writers I suspect, I've been happily plodding along using MS Word for my manuscript, using the document map function to help navigate my way around the enormous document. Until this week, that is...

On the recommendation of some fellow writers, I decided to try Scrivener and downloaded the free trial. (NB: I got the Windows version but it's available for Mac too.)

And?

So far, so good!
